The volunteer will work as part of the Red Cross program Social Support for Asylum Seekers. The program consists of a number of targeted projects that carry out weekly social activities for people applying for international protection in Iceland. Social activities currently include a Women’s Group, Youth Club, Open House and Language Classes. Other projects can be added depending on volunteer availability. The program aims to help reduce social isolation and give asylum seekers an opportunity to stay active during the application period, as well as offer a platform to meet, connect, socialize and learn about Icelandic society and culture. The main role of the ESC volunteer is planning and running the activities alongside the project managers and volunteers as well as offering other support as needed. The volunteer will also be expected to work with a high degree of independence at times.


The volunteer will live in a flat in Reykjavík with other ESC volunteers and will have a private room. The volunteer receives food money for all meals except for 2 lunch meals/week received at the project. A bus card will be provided to the volunteer.


The volunteer gets: – Specific training to get started in the project – Ongoing training throughout the year in various topics including First Aid and Psychosocial Support – Opportunity to take initiative and develop new skills – Opportunity to be introduced to other projects within the Icelandic Red Cross – A fun and meaningful experience, whilst getting to know the Icelandic culture as well as cultures of the clients that you will work with.


The volunteer should be 24 yrs old minimum; be social and interested in getting to know people; be organized, able to perform well under pressure; able to work independently, take initiative but able to work well in a team; have good communication skills; be open-minded and willing to listen and show empathy; be able to take initiative; have good English language skills, other languages, especially Spanish, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian are a strong advantage; have basic computer skills; have a strong interest in the field of migration; have previous experience working with volunteers.
